FOT — the lung test you do by just breathing
Forced Oscillation Technique · Oscillometry
FOT sends gentle pressure waves into your airways while you breathe normally through a mouthpiece. It measures how much your airways resist airflow — including the small airways that the usual blowing test can miss.
Who it helps
- Children and older adults who find hard blowing difficult
- Asthma and COPD: diagnosis and checking how well inhalers work
- Early small-airway disease in smokers and people exposed to dust or smoke
- Anyone too breathless to perform spirometry
What to expect
You sit upright with a nose clip, support your cheeks with your hands and breathe calmly for about 30 seconds, usually three times. It is painless and takes only a few minutes.
Diagnostics
Tests that find the real cause
Accurate tests mean the right treatment from the start.
Lung function test (PFT)
Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe out and how fast. It is the key test for asthma, COPD, lung fibrosis (IPF) and chronic cough.
Peak flow monitoring
A small hand-held meter to track asthma and COPD at home, so your medicines can be adjusted before symptoms get worse.
Pulse oximetry
A painless clip on the finger that measures the oxygen level in your blood. Checked for every patient at every visit.
Sleep study (polysomnography)
An overnight recording of breathing, oxygen and sleep to diagnose sleep apnea. Untreated sleep disorders are linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
6-minute walk test
How far you can walk on a flat surface in six minutes, with oxygen monitoring. Used for lung fibrosis, COPD and pulmonary hypertension.
Sputum test
Lab testing of phlegm to identify bacteria (including TB) or fungi, so the right medicine can be chosen. A fresh early-morning sample works best.
Treatment & support
Care that continues at home
BiPAP / CPAP / oxygen therapy
Non-invasive breathing support for sleep apnea, severe stable COPD and obesity-hypoventilation syndrome — with machines available on rent.
Pulmonary rehabilitation
A structured programme of exercise, breathing techniques, nutrition advice and relaxation that improves daily life with chronic lung disease.
Allergy testing & immunotherapy
Testing to find what you are allergic to — dust, pollen, mould, animal dander — followed by immunotherapy where suitable.
Vaccination
Flu and pneumococcal vaccines protect people with asthma and COPD, who are at higher risk from these infections. Keep your vaccines up to date.
Procedures
Interventional pulmonology
Minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat diseases of the airways and the lining of the lungs.
- Video bronchoscopy — camera examination of the airways, with samples
- Pleural tapping (thoracentesis) — draining fluid from around the lung
- ICD insertion — chest drain for air or fluid in the chest
- Medical thoracoscopy — looking directly at the lining of the lung
